please.............please.................. be clear with the statement as it will again confuse people

a 12" wide tire is approx a 315mm or the smaller 295 (what's avalable out there) I use 25mm per inch so the real math would say 300 mm

I run 275's on a 9.5'" rim and would not even consider 275's on an 8.5" rim nor will you find a reputable shop that would say it's OK to run a 315 on an 8.5" rim.

then you go on to say "the tire will be a little taller and stick out from the rim" which are 2 different things altogether. First, the width of the tire has nothing to do with being "taller", that is the aspect ratio of the tire and also wheel diameter. Then you go on to say the tire will stick out from the rim which with a 315 series on an 8.5" wide wheel is a major understatement. Might it work; possibly. Is it safe, no.

We're all here on the forum to help each other but I beg of those who seem to be a bit misinformed to please search and learn about

tire width
wheel diameter
tire aspect ratio
overall tire height

and how one affects the other

cheers

well i'm not so much looking to go wider, theres not a whole lot of extra room side to side with the stock rims unless i were to get wheel spacers, there is however quite a lot of room from the tire to the wheel well where the diameter is concerned, from the tire to the lip there is about 2.5" and inside the well there is about 6. larger diameter isnt a concern since i have 4:10 gearing and the speedometer wasnt re-calibrated from that, and the speedo cable has broken completely just recently (I use my GPS all the time for speed) I also want to keep the stock rims because i like the look, i just think it looks a like its missing a little from the side

so then lower it an inch or two. I don't see any benefits or attraction to just getting a higher aspect ratio to get a larger overall diameter. but that's just me. also theres definitely more room to go wider, 295 on a 10.5" rim is what I have and it's perfect.
