Grind in 1st and 2nd gears

Hello all. I'm new to the forum and have been the proud owner of a 94 LT1 for the last 3 months.

There's a grind especially in 1st gear. It happens mostly when I'm trying to give it some power, like maybe pulling into traffic on an uphill start. Admittedly, this IS my first manual tranny vehicle, but we're not talking about the beginner-manual driver kind of grind. As a matter of fact, I've learned to drive it in a way that the grind doesn't happen by babying it on starts, which kind of takes the fun out of owning a manual V8. It happens more to my experienced manual driving friends.

The common consensus among my informed friends is that it is linkage/synchro problem. If so, is this something I'm gonna need a whole new tranny for or is it something that can be patched up?

I got it for a steal, even though there's the tranny problem, I have a broken compressor (and it's gettin' HOT in NOLA), and the ragtop leaks.

Thanks

so it grinds when you try to put it in gear? or after its in gear and you give it gas? is the grinding coming from the rear of the car? can u feel it in the shifter, clutch peddle, seat of pants?

It grinds after it's in gear and I give it gas. It feels like it's coming from the front of the car. I can feel more in the clutch than the shifter or seat.

does the car slow down or jump when it grinds? im trying to figure if its really in the trany or something like a mount.

"If you can't fine em, grind em"! ;)
Any chance you're feeling clutch chatter? Or maybe a bad mount making the trans go hippity-hop to the repair shop?

I wouldn't say it jumps when it grinds. I should clarify that the grind is a bit more of a 'moaning' sound.

One friend DID mention that it might be some loose mountings.

It's a grinding sensation through the clutch though

Bad throwout bearing...perhaps.

yep may be a good idea to take the inspection cover off if it has one and have a look at the clutch and throwout bearing. im thinking the pressure plate is getting weak or a spring or two may have busted.

The service records didn't show where the clutch had ever been replaced and it IS a 16 y/o vehicle.

I'm just trying to get a rough idea how much this problem is gonna set me back before I take it in.

Thanks
