If you are so new I would suggest something a little bit milder than a 383 for your first. A good lt1 car with bolt-ons would be a good start then you can build it as you get use to the power thats how i started out. Plus you don't know what you get when you buy prebuilt almost made that mistake. Guy had advertised LT4 383 on craigs list talked to him a couple of times the week before I go to pick it up he makes a correction the heads are just LT1 heads so I knew then the guy did not know what he had.

well my dad has been a mechanic for over 40 years hes gunna check it out completely and bring it by a shop to be checked out also. i am not sure the gear ratio but i believe it only has a 97 engine and transmision, so whatever the 94 camaro rear-ends gearing has it should still be that and yeah i heard someone say 28ish on highway and i was like no way that would be awesome!! and its a 6speed manual transmission... and from what the seller say i think the transmision and engine only have about 40,000 ish miles on it but the car has about 150,000. and i am only guessing with the miles on the engine and transmision it could be a few more or less i dont remember the exact mileage. and what the car needs is a new optispark distrubutor? do you guys know much about them my dad's friend has one hes gunna give it to us for $100. i heard they go anywhere from $140-220... depending on which type you buy. and i also heard the optispark normally goes bad till you get the after market optispark. also i am curious about the reliability of the lt4 engine? you guys are such great help thank you so much!! i am new so sorry for any mistakes! and i am about positive its a 383 you could tell by looking at it and my dads gunna check it out further this saturday to make sure the seller isnt hiding anything from us... and i also heard the 383 ONLY gets good gas mileage normally cruising and when ur easy on the pedal... if you ride the pedal hard i believe it gets 10ish.

carguy i have been driving my dads 2002 ws6 transam with a supercharger and 6spd manual for over two years now and hes about to dump a whole new ls3 engine in it and itll be running at 660ish hp.. its completely custom built.. but i dont think ill be able to handle that at all.. but im definately going to try to test drive this car before i purchase it to make sure its not to much to handle cause im also looking at and automatic 6cyl 2000 trans am that i would go for if this car doesnt work out or is simply to much.. but thank you for the advice!! you could be right about this car and theres a pretty good chance you are!

There really is no way to predict the MPG on an engine like this. At the time the motor was built the are a lot of little decision that are made even down to the type of headers. Most people that build 383s opt for the power side and not the MPG side. Even the tune can have a pretty big effect. I have known guys that swapped PCMs for weekend racing or the PCM can run a LOT different fuel mapping based on % of throttle.

In the first post you said it was a 93 in a later post you said it was a 94 rear? If its a 93 6 speed you really need to be carful. The 93 6 speed can not handle the torque of a 383. There are 2 version of the T56 6 speed in 93, The M28 and the M29. The M28 is only rated for 350 FT/lb of torque. A decent 383 will be over 450. If your rear is from 93 6 speed it will be either 2.73 or a 3.23. If it is from a 94 6 speed it will be a 3.42.

I'm not sure how you can tell it's a 383. Everything that would make it a 383 would be on the inside of the engine and impossible to tell from the outside. I could put two LT1's side by side on an engine stand, same color, same everything with the only differences being one completely stock and the other a 383 stroker and you will not be able to tell the difference without hearing them or tearing into them. Just saying.

V6 Trans Am, I don't think so. V6 Firebird. 2000 Trans Am would be a LS1 motor.

I am hopeing for twenty mpg in my 95z with a 383. I bought an opti off ebay with lifetime warranty for about $50. buy the v six or just a hull and talk dad out of the blown ls1 you would know what you have. depending on the cam and rpm range even the MSD opti will not hold up.
