Default few motor questions

ok i plan on doing a 383 stroker build and i have came to the conclusion of buying a seperate block and building little by little as money is an issue.

if i buy a block of someone what are some key things to look out for?
i know its always better to buy a crate block but i dont have 600 to buy one and in my area i found a few 350 motors for sale for a decent price

is 250 - 300 good for a bare block?

and if i should go supercharger or turbocharger is carboarated better than fuel injected?

and is there a way to seal and keep the 350 thats in the car for later use without to many problems

Are you sticking with the LT1? If so, you can't use just any 350 block out there. The LT1 is reverse cooled, coolant flows through the head first then down into the block, where else a normal 350 runs from the block up to the heads. You'll need to find a LT1 block.

Fuel injected is better. It'll give you more power (with the right tune) and better mileage.

If you are doing a LT1 supercharged or turbo you need to know that before you buy the first part. Looks like you have a lot of research to do before you buy anything. I could buy a lower miles LS1 Z28 and make 500 HP NA for less money than you could build a dependable Turbo 383 out of a LT1.

FYI:
Pre LT1 V8's are Gen 1 block
Lt1's are Gen2 block
LS1 (All LSX) are Gen3 (There are generations within this generation)
The New LT1 is a Gen4 ( I know nothing about these)

If you are buying just a block you really want to know what to look for and have the equipment to inspect it. Unless someone has a block that just came back from a known machine shop, pressure tested and inspected I would not want to pay much more then scrap rate for it. Even if you hear the motor run there could be casting defects that make it "not suited" for a 383. This is a lot less common in the 90's then in the 70's but it can happen.

If budget is a real issue find a blown LS1 Camaro for cheap and install a 5.3 (GM Truck engine) and make up your own turbo kit. Every large town/city has someone doing this that can help you and do the tune on the computer.

These guys are local to me and have step by step guides complete lists of parts needs (most are junk yard parts).

why do i need to buy another car as i have a 96 z28 im just wanting to do this slow for the time being untill this motor goes
and i live in a very small town in the mountains.

well where i live i have found a very good machine shop EVERY one keeps telling me about.

I was wondering about carbed or fuel injected because i didnt know if i should go to pre LT1 or not. Im most likely stick with the lt1. I know LS1 has more power im not really looking for a full blown drag car

and i done called every junk yard within 200 miles of me and found 1 95 Z28 and the rest were 3.4 or 3.8 people out here figured out it would be cheaper to fix these v8 camaros then it is to scrap it and buy a new one.

could i do the same truck motor in my 96? also what trucks utillized the LS1 motor (i know i cant use the impala or monte as those are FW cars)

Ive found 1 fully built 383 and he wanted 6k for it.

you would want to keep it lt1. the cost for good shop to do it right, 3-4k to do the bottom end right. another 3k for heads cam and stuff. you will want to decide if your going to boost it or nos because you will want to go high or low compression depending on the way you go. lt1 likes high compression, 12-1 on pump gas is not a problem.

You do not have to do anything. I was giving you suggestions. You really want to research the process of converting your car to gen 1 small block. Your car has a OBD2 computer network in it. Everything in you car is controlled by that network. The main component of that is the PCM. There is no easy work around this computer system. We have seen guys give up and scrape the car because they did not do enough research before tearing the computer out. We have also seen guys spend over a year and thousands and thousands of dollars just to get a Gen1 engine in 94 car that has less issues then you are going to have.

Read this first. This kid is persistent but he is in 10K deep and I have yet to see a finished car. I tried to explain things to him early on not to be an ahole but to stop him from wasting money. With the money he now has in the car he could have been driving a mint SS with 400 HP to the wheels. On the plus side he learned a LOT.

Your research should show you the LT1 is a great motor and if you follow a road map like Craby did the LT1 is a good choice. But you mentioned Turbo and super charger. These motors do not respond well to boost. Yes you can make it work but you are going to need lower compression. If you build a low compression motor and do not add the turbo it will be slower then you stock motor.

If you want boost like a turbo the cheapest way to get there is to buy a blown LS1 car. The 5.3 is the cast iron version of the LS1 and will bolt in to the Camaro and it loves the heads and intake from.

LS1 Camaro with a blown LS1 engine $1500 Decent shape 5.3 with 60K $500 comp cam kit and valve springs $400. 5.3 with Cam and LS1 heads and intake your at 350 HP. Another 2K in a junk yard turbo kit and you can hit 600 HP. It is a roll of the dice on how long it will last. We have seen the crappy 4.8 hit 900HP on a dyno and stay together but it is all about the tune.

This may not be for you but it is fun to learn about. Also the LQ9 is an 6.0 from a larger truck. They are designed super heavy and they are direct bolt in to a LS1 camaro and they are 350HP stock. They are far from cheap but they where designed to handle high torque in a 6000lb 4x4. You can beat it from sun up till sun down for 200,000 miles in a light weight 2wd Camaro.

Like I said there are a lot of options but it all comes back to what you want and what you can afford. Research research research. You want to be sure you understand the full project before you spend the first penny. Planning ahead is great. I find one big project killer is people go to swap meets and see a "great" deal on something then they try to design their car around that. What they end up with is a mix match of parts and a car that is not great at anything and you end up redoing the whole thing or giving up.

You do not have to call yards
http://car-part.com/

Lt1 bottom ends can be found is tow package caprices, Buick roadmasters and Corvettes. If you get a LT1 from something other that a vet or Camaro/firebird you will want to use your heads. Also setup searches on craigs list. I found a 93 LT1 with 32,000 miles for $800 and that was the complete motor with everything still bolted to it. So now I have spare everything.

i didnt necessarily wanted to boost i was trying to figure out if i want boost or not.

Im more old school NA is more for me, I know to do alot of research about this and this is why i came here for a first stop. To do research i would rather ask 1000 questions and annoy the **** out of people just to get the right answers.

I know i want the LT series so i dont have to mess with any of the wiring or computer stuff besides taking it out to get it tuned.

My whole goal of this the joyment of working on it here and there.

that being said will a 3rd gen 350 block on my 4th gen? or just another lt1 4th gen.
When all said and done im going cam port and polish heads the whole 9 cause i can do it little by little.

I live in the 24171 area and try finding a z28 or ss for $800 cause i will jump all over it.

$450 for a rebuilt LT1 with receipts?????

Either he doesn't know what he has and is just trying to get rid of it, or he knows what he has and botched the rebuild, or it was never rebuilt and it known to have a cracked block or some other catastrophic issue.

Your chances are about 80% that you would be pissing away your money getting that engine.
