Default droping oil pan

ok. so iv come to a hault at trying to remove my oil pan. i look up how other people have done it and no one has had this problem. iv got all the bolts out, starter off. engine raise. but theres a problem. the oil coolant unit that sits with the oil filter unit, wont let it drop down. the pan might come down a 1/8 inch. i see no bolts to take out of it, just some sealant around the top of it. so my question is this. is there any other thing i can do to get the pan out or am i gonna have to take all that off?

Being that you did not mention what engine you are working with, I am guessing the engine is using the stock GM oil cooler. You need to look up into the bottom of the oil cooler. There is a large nut in the center of the cooler holding it to a short pipe coming from the block. Remove the nut and the oil cooler will fall out.

I was flustered on that as well recently. He is right, it isn't held on very snug. I took some pliers and gripped the fitting and with a slight turn it loosened up and the cooler came right off.

It also made it A LOT easier for replacing the pan gasket and working around the pan with those lines out of the way. I went ahead and left mine off and you can get the bypass hose from OReilly for around $17.

im sorry, it is the stock cooler and its an lt1. but i was hopeing i wouldnt have to do that cause my headers come right by where the cooler and filter go. i have an adapter on it right now. so id have to take my drives side header off to get that off. this is turning into more then i expected. but when does it ever not. thanks for the info.
