dex cool?
i got a 95 z28 dose it take dex cool or regular anti freze? it came with a book to a 96 cause it says its ob2 but its got a ob1 port so i dont know what the hell its suposed to use i thought it had a cast iron block?
Really????
Here's what I understand about Dexcool. When it came out, it was thought to be much better than the other coolants on the market because it's an "extended life" coolant. Why Dexcool got a bad rap is because hardly anybody ever had their systems flushed on a regular basis because of it's advertised "long life". Sure, it may last longer on it's own, but the same internal influences still exist; rust build-up, sludge, acidity, etc. So, people started having problems with their cooling systems clogging or corroding away because of never flushing the system. It doesn't really matter which one you use, since you should flush your system periodically anyway. But since the Dexcool costs more, the green stuff is perfectly fine to use. Like anything else, maintenance is the key to preventing problems, but the cooling system often gets overlooked.

i speak from experience about the dexcool problems i spoke of earlier...i work for my fathers auto parts store and he's **** about maintenance. dexcool made 2 heater cores on 2 different trucks go to hell...so we flushed it all and went with the green...haven't had a single issue since
When you go into the store, look on the back and read the ingredients between Dexcool and Prestone....virtually identical. I was just comparing them the other day, and opted for the green stuff. Now, the only Prestone that my local stores are carrying is the "extended life", so it's quite possible it's similar to the Dexcool, just a different color. The verbage on the Dexcool says it's designed to protect aluminum engine components better, but that could be advertising hype? Don't know how important that is as opposed to how important regular maintenance is. Maybe those were cheap azz cores you were using, if they were corroding through too? Or did they just plug, and with what? Was it rusty sludge, or did the coolant solidify? If you got rust and sludge, did you ever consider that tampering with the cooling system may have loosened/dislodged some crud that was laying dormant?

the trucks were a year old at the time...so no, i don't think something in there was dormant. and yes, it clogged like the stuff had solidified. i've had a lot of people have issues with it so we choose to change it on every vehicle we have
Strange how that works. I had Dexcool in my old 2000 Monte Carlo, and never had a problem with it for the four years I had it. I'm not a proponent of the Dex anyway, I still prefer the "old reliable" stuff. "Go Green"!
