Cooling fan...

Cooling fan...
What is it (thing)that goes wrong, or brakes, or short circuits, or dies, or whatever, which causes the cooling fan to come on prematurely?
Often times my fan will come on at start up, even in the dead of winter. If it doesn't come on right away, it comes on after five or so minutes. It comes on, and switches on/off. I don't think I've ever seen the temp get above 160 (Though that may actually be a good thing. lol.).
I could have sworn that some circuit or connection goes kapoot, and that's the cause, but I can't remember exactly what.
As always, I appreciate any and all help.
P.S. I searched for 45 seconds...then got lazy. lol.

RE: Cooling fan...
Do you know if the car has had a new thermostat put into it? 160 deg thermostats are the "aftermarket" one to install, just a thought.
Other than that, are you getting an SES light when the fan comes on?

Is there an easy way to check for said thermostat? Does the dash thermostat indicator change?
Nope, no SES light. I wish it would come on though, I'd take to a shop faster than you can say bleh!
