Default cap and rotor failure on my girlfriend (1993 Z28) ?

has anybody heard before of a distrebutor jerking in and out and destroying the cap and rotor??????? the mechanic that had replace the cap and rotor kit on my camaro a week a go (note cap and rotor kit was 299.99??? does that sound right?) said yesterday not when he was replacing it! that the distrebutor is a high preformance dis. and that could be the reason my cap and rotor is failing again? and then he goes on saying that my distrebutor could be jerking in and out and making the rotor rub onto the cap. does this make any sence?! before i had took it back to him i had two diffrent mechanics look at it and had them run a diagnostic on the car and both of them told me the samething there is something wrong with the cap and rotor!!

Cap and Rotor is a very common Failure on LT's, very hard to replace cause of the space, and very expensive. It just wear faster that other cap & Rotor system imo. Anyway, destroying it, might have to do with some thing really wear out at the shaft of the optispark distributor, that is making it rub hard against the cap. I had mine fail due to "water and who knows what" because of its OEM location, and I change it for a new piece from MSD. Sold the car, 20,000 miles on the actual owner, and no Problems so far.

Had an issue like this in a TBI 350 GEN I , CAP cracking, and kept replacing CA and Rotors for like 4 weeks, until I changed to a new Distributor.

Hope this helps.

i would not recomend changing just the cap and rotor on these cars and would also recomend that the water pump be changed when the distributor is. an old pump can leak on the dist and ruin a new one in no time at all. it could be the cap was not installed right and that was the cause or it could be the shaft is lose and it alowed the rotor to hit the cap. i would look at the old unit and see. make the machanic explain how it was that it could happen.
