95 z28 idle
i have a 95 z28 6 speed. when the car is normal temperature it idles right at 1000 rpm. is this normal? because i saw a thread about people idling a lot lower than 1000. also in the morning if its really cold for the first few minutes my car will idle around 1500-1700, i am assuming this is to warm the engine up.

that is high for idle. should be in the 700 range and it is normal for it to have high idle when cold or at startup. mine idles around 600 and 1000 at warmup. have it scanned to see if its got any stored trouble codes. have u had the ses light come on? could be one or more of a few things so to isolate it could save u same bucks.

where would i go about getting it scanned? it is a pretty new engine less than 5000 miles on it. the mechanic that put it in hasnt said anything and he looks at it every few months or so. could it be that i use regular 87 octane fuel?

Here are some options to scan for codes:
- Most auto stores should be able to scan it for free (ie. AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, Checker, Pep Boys, etc.).
- You can purchase a cable and download software to scan the car yourself. On this website -> http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/toplevel.asp?cat=0. Software links are posted at the bottom.
- You can go to an auto mechanic and they will likely charge you.

If so, the prior owner may have turned the idle screw. If that's the case, turn it in and you'll see the idle drop

call your local autozone and see if they will do it for u. some will some wont. may have to call around and see if one of the parts stores will do it for u. if not call some dealers and see what they say. 95 is most likely a 1.5 obd (not sure if some 2obds got in there) so alot of scanners wont work on it.

the computer sets the idle. u can mess it up by turning the idle down all the way using the screw. not enough air gets threw the butterflies.

if u have spare time take the egr and the iac valves out and look em over for damage and clean em. lately we been having a lot of cars with dirty iac valves causing idle issues.
