396 wont start
Just got my computer back from PCM for less so I could fire the new 396 up for the first time that I and a buddy built. I've got spark and fuel and timing is dead on, checked and re checked 3 times. Anti-theft is good..... So in a little loss of ideas.... Anything I need to have done or something I'm forgetting computer wise because of the tune. My modis at the shop says I have a desired Idle of 3184 rpms.... Any help would be awesome! Thanks guys! Also starting to think I may have the opti 180 off. Back firing out the exhaust.
It is pretty hard to mount the Opti wrong, unless it is forced on in the wrong spot.
Being that the engine is not running, how do you know that the spark timing is dead on?
Have you checked the fuel pressure with a gage?
Are the injectors being fired?
Are the rocker arms properly adjusted?
Are you sure the spark plug wires are where they are supposed to be?
Back firing out of the exhaust can be caused by many things, but usually because fuel is being ignited in the exhaust system, or an exhaust valve is still open during the power stroke, or when the spark plug is fired.
You may want to check that all the rocker arms are properly adjusted, and the camshaft properly phased.

this could be another opti with the rotor out of postion from the factory. we have recently had a fellow with a opti that had the rotor set up wrong from the factory. he caught it by compairing the new opti with the old and with the shafts in the same position on the spined end, the rotors were in different places. otherwise tripple check all your wires. see if your getting constant power to the pink wire at the coil with the key on.
When the #1 piston is at TDC compression stroke, is the rotor pointing to the terminal inside the distributor cap that corresponds with the #1 spark plug wire terminal?
Umm, not too sure. Opti's are spread out in a circle equally spaced with 4 plug ports on on the left and right side. If I knew which tab on the inside of the cap was one that'd be awesome. But I ran into another problem and had an a** load of coolant in the oil....
Yeah, I think your no start problem was a blessing in disguise!
A couple of likely things to suspect is that something is ****ed up with either an intake or head gasket (hopefully).
Were the cylinder walls originally sonic checked for thickness? That would suck if there was an unseen crack or a paper thin area in a cylinder wall that let loose.
