of my 1995 Camaro Z28 V8 LT1 with 7000 miles.

replace the water pump,,,, well i guess it depends on where its leaking from, if its a leaky gasket (leak from the sides) or a failing water pump (leaking from the center/weap hole) or leaking hose/s

how old is the pump? More than likely you'll want to replace the whole unit and gaskets. It's also a good time to check all the upper and lower hoses for cracks and leaks. for most novices, its about a 2-3 hour job. Invest in a haynes manual and it will walk you through it.

 

you might want to replace the opti too you prob dripped some coolant in there

The water pump leaked through the center.

We could not get a new one and decided to fix the pump taking it to a specialty pump store and replace all the gaskets and check all the hoses.

Any more advices?

opti is your distributor and is under the water pump. can pick one up thats warrented/acceptable from chandlermotorsports who is a site sponsor.

 

the seals are what goes on these water pumps. when they go the antifreeze will drip down on the opti and can ruin it. rebuilt pumps can fail at startup or soon thereafter, keeping in mind a failing pump can ruin the opti,,, if your opti is good then i would not mess with it with a rebuilt water pump on there. be a bummer if you bought a new opti and the pump failed and ruined it. should be able to pick up a new pump at any parts store, may have to order it for you. admittedly the pump is not cheap but neither is a opti.

 

It's not a mandatory replacement but take a look at the unit. If its discolored in the middle you might want to be mindful of any changes in driving behavior. A couple drips isn't going to nuke the unit, but if you continue to drive after its leaking eventually you'll pay the price.

The opti is fine.

Since we could not get a new water pump, we replace the center pin and all the gaskets. So far it is working. Eventually we will order a new pump. The Camaro Z28 has 7000 original miles. We drive it twice a week only.
