Default Rear end question, help please =]

Ok so theres a good chance the TA is gunna go through some major changes here soon, i am wanting to upgrade the rear end as well, but i dont know rear ends very well. I have ours is a 10 bolt 7.5 in, but i need to know what to go to, i was thinking ford 9 in and i could find a used one but what do i need specifically, length wise? what year rear ends? i jus dont know. Also do you think if i jus did the moser shafts, hardened diff gurtle, and gears, would that hold,, ummm lets jus say around 550 hp? thanks

This is why ask questions like this on LS1Tech and not here. Those mods that you listed does address many of the ten bolts weaknesses, but I still doubt that it will hold up for very long with 550HP.

the ford 9" you want isnt one off of another vehicle. Fabricators use the major components of the 9" and fabricate an Fbody housing and mounting points. This is an expensive mod and there isnt really an easy way around it as ALL rear ends will be fabricated.

another option is to go to the chevy 12 bolt. it isnt quite as strong, but you arent probably going to be running 9's on slicks so I wouldnt worry about it.

I went with the Dana S60 which is technically a 12 bolt I think, except that it is made of pure awesome and could make a soviet tank do a wheel stand. I was told I would get a deal out of it which didnt end up happening.... (know your builder.....) but it is still an awesome peice. if I had to do it again I would probably do 12 bolt and save the money since my nittos arent likely to break anything anyways.

check online vendors like ws6 store and texas-speed, they should have some rear ends for you. I remember it was kind of a pain to order since there are so many options so research waht your car is equipped with as far as brakes and whatnot and then select your options from there. plan to spend 2k on parts alone.

Quick Performance have got some affordable 9 inch rears, I know nothing of their quality though.

9" are also cool because they don't take the shimming to get set up like the 10 and 12 bolt do.

what are your overall plans? A cheap route would be to get the 10 bolt aftermarket diff cover. Supposedly strengthens the housing which will allow you to throw a little more power at it. The guys at ls1tech will say its everything short of a scam, but then again they never give advice that doesn't come with a 20,000 dollar price tag. It wont be anywhere near as good as an aftermarket rear, but it will probably give you SOMETHING, so if you are thinking boltons and a mild cam and street tires this may be a better option for you

yeah im not looking to go dropping 2k on a rear, theres got to be a cheaper way, if i do the sts kit with 40 lb injectors, and a tune from a local shop who done this kit like 10 times they have hit consistant numbers of 515-540 hp, if i do a cam, and boltons im not worried about my rear end, if it blows ill jus pick up another stock one, theyre everywhere by me, but i may do what i said before and strengthen everything but the posi pretty much,,,
