Question problem filling gas tank.

My car won't take gas without backing up and spilling out the fill tube. I have to trickle it in slowly stoping every few seconds to let the fuel drop down the filler neck, so as not to overflow. Anyone else ever see this before?

I've seen it! My 06 Durango did that and something was wrong with something and I had to get the whole gas tank replaced. But we aren't talking about durangos.

Our 97 Camaro started doing this after we had some bad work done on the fuel pump. They bent the filler neck when they removed the gas tank to replace the fuel pump. After multiple attempts to get the problem fixed we went to a different shop who had to replace the fuel pump, fuel pump assembly, and gas tank. (Sometimes trying to save money costs twice as much in the long run). It's been running great since . However, depending on the gas station, we sometimes get a little gas regurgitation. I think some pumps pump gas way faster than others. I can't tell you how to fix your problem but starting with the filler neck/gas tank may be a good idea. Best of luck to you. I know first hand how troublesome this problem is. It's no fun to have gas shoot out all over your clothes and run down the side of your car.

Is the little stainless anti-surge flapper in the neck still there? Sometime they break off and get lodged in the neck farther down

I believe you are correct Gary. That piece is missing. We've had no work done either. I'm going to use a coat hanger to try and get it down into the tank.

It's stainless steel. Magnets might not work.
