Default Oil

Have a '99 SS with LS6 heads. Looking for opinions on type of oil (synthetic or a blend) and brand to use. Thanks!

Mobil 1 and Pennzoil are both good oils for the money. Royal Purple, Amzoil, and Brad Penn are more expensive but are a bit better. You also need a good filter as well. Mobil 1, Purolator, Bosch, AC Delco, K & N are all good filters. Mileage as a factor as well.

I always used Mobil 1 FS with a Mobil 1 filter, but recently switched to Pennzoil HM with a Purolator PureOne filter since the car turned 120k and the price difference.

What you want is a oil with a high zinc and phosphorus content. A good oil filter is wix.

He would only need the oil with a higher zinc and phosporus if he was running a flat tappet cam. For the newer motors with roller cams any of the off the self oil will work. If you run the higher zinc and pho. in your latter vehicals it will ruin the cat. I only run speciality oil in my rides. 15w-40 or 20w-50 in any thing with a flat tappet and 5w-30 semi syn. for the late model rides. The 15w-40 diesel oil contain enough zinc and pho. for the flat tappet motors along with the 20w-50. I have a store that stock Schaeffer oil for my applications. The 5w-30 full syn. is also DEXO approved for the 2010 GM vehicals. Not sure if any of the other have that high of a rating. You can check out their web page by going to Schaefferoil.com it very informitive and you can learn a lot from their web page.

I say Lubro moly. Its amazing oil... Better then anything else i have used. Yeah its a bit more expensive, but in my mind what is an extra $5-10 for an oil change every few months?

Mobil 1 is probably the best because of its quality for the money you pay. I use acdelco filters, mainly because that is a GM filter.

10w40!!?? are you having oil pressure problems? because that is too think for these engine. 5w30 should be used, i could see possibly using a 10w30 in the summer if you live in the south and have extreme heat.

Why would that be too thick? Especially since that oil acts like a viscosity 40 only in the summer when it's hot and 10 in the winter. It's no different than running 10w-30 in the winter.
