Noise driving me insane, is she sick?
So I go to Boston for a week, love that city. I come back to Florida to my 02 SS excited about driving and feeling her power. i jump in and start her up and i hear a sound. like air leaking with a kinda high pitched wheeze to it. So me knowing nothing about cars thinks hmmm air, sounds coming from back, exhaust leak? So as i drive the sound is a steady pitched wheeze quite loud actually. Went to eat and when i came out i noticed when i turn the key to the on position but dont start the car the sound comes on for about 3 seconds and then stops, it resumes when i turn the car on. I also noticed that when i first start the car all the lights interior and exterior brighten and dim brighten and dim, then the sound of the wheeze goes with the lights... as they get brighter the sound gets louder. then it dies off. After i drive it stays steady with only i very light dim of the lights at stop signs. Then i thought maybe since it has somthin with electrical maybe fuel pump or somthin but i have no idea... sorry its a long read. any ideas where to start looking?
Thanks

RE: Noise driving me insane, is she sick?
Just got off work this morning, gotta go again tomorrow 24hrs. So I wont get to check it out till tuesday, but here is somthing to add to my problem. At 55 the car is at 2000 rpms or so, I give a bunch of gas and it downshifts and throws me back some jumps up to sixty and then just stays there at 4000 rpms and no more accelerating. Could this be linked to the same noise, or maybe two things went wrong at the same time? Thank alot for the help. Ill try the egr route as soon as i can.

The noise you describe sounds like the fuel pump. It cycles on and off as needed to maintain proper fuel pressure. The first time you turn the key on after allowing the car to sit overnight or longer, it will take on the order of three seconds to pressurize the system. The fact that the lights will dim at a stop (with the engine running) implies a poor charging circuit. My 2001 Z28 had a leaky PS pump when I bought it. First thing that happened was my alternator (covered in PS fluid) started working intermittently. I could see the voltage gauge flick between 9 and 14 volts. If your fuel pump is enough of a load to dim the lights I suggest you check out the charging system. Your charging (engine running) voltage should be 13.5-14.5 volts. If thats good, then measure battery voltage (enging off). It should be 12-12.5 volts (sometimes higher). Now turn the headlights on and measure again. If you're below 11 volts the battery needs to be replaced for sure.
That being said, I know my '01 has a TSB regarding interior lights and headlight flicker, and have seen it myself...happens occasionally as I shift, usually in the lower gears if ever. Its just a blink though... It wont last for anywhere near 3 seconds.
