They are totally different engines, the only thing in common are that they are V8s. The Lt1 oveheating is a maintenance problemcaused bypeople not knowing how to fill the radiator, or mixing antifreeze typeswhich results in sludged upradiators.

Lt1 is an excellant engine. I have over 140,000 miles on mine and it runs like new. That's only because of keeping up with basic maintenance and care. LS1 is awesome also. Chevy makes great v8'sso i wouldn't be worried at all. I'd rather have a LS1 only because there is a little more aftermarket for it, faster, and i like the front end a little bit. but im happy with my LT1. Anyways good luck with your purchase, deffinatly go for the 98 LS1, its an excellant car!

You can go very fast for your buck with the LS1, and not so fast with your buck in the LT1, both are great budget cars but the LS1 will absolutely get you more bang for your buck.
Early LT1's had opti-spark issues, aren't very hard to solve but finding a mechanic to do it right if you aren't a DIY guy, can be a little tricky and you might be throwing away money. As for reliability issues, the GM 10bolt isn't the greatest piece ever, but a girdle goes a long way towards saving the rear, cheap too. The stock clutch isn't the greatest, but what V8 performance cars clutch from the factory is good? None.
4thgen F-body's are reliable cars, it's all about previous maint. & luck of the draw I suppose..
