Default K&N Filter Idea

I was looking into getting a new air intake for my car since the stock one seems to be really restrictive. I have always liked K&N but their kit was 350 dollars or I could get the one they make for Summit for 300. I was looking through all of the specs for their kit and found that the filter used should fit directly over the oblong hole that connects the current lid to the TB. Both were just about 2x5.75. Has anyone ever tried this? Do you think it would work? If I do decide to do it should I also try to eliminate the two boxes on either side of the stock airbox and make it more straight through. This would only cost me about 100 for the filter.

I have seen some k&n kits on ebay for $280. Every now and then you'll see an auction for one and get it cheaper than that.

I actually found a kit for like 100 so I am going to go with that. It is the full K&N kit, but it is supposed to provide 14 HP. I know that is not always true, but I like that better than the new lid, plus it looks better.

Where'd you find one for $100? And I agree with you, I think it looks better.

It isn't new or anything. A buddy of mines uncle owns a shop and had one for some reason, but I figure since it isn't a part that wears out why get a new one.

Lots of people have done this but it actually will make eyou lose power. The aftermarket airlids are designed to smooth out the air flow and draw cooler air in. Just putting that filter on will not gain you power.

You can generally find used lids for $40-$50 at swap meets - someone is always upgraded/experimenting. the two boxes on either side of the stock intake are resonance chambers to make it a bit quieter - they don't rob any power but don't add any either.

How does the aftermarket lid draw in cooler air? How is it just as good as a k&n? Also, Is there a prefferedmaker of theaftermarket lids or are they all the same?
