1.You really need to do bolt on stuff FIRST. A lid, Cat back, Long tube headers, ported TB, LS6 intake...etc. Doing cam and heads without bolt ons first is a no no.
2.There really is no need for a clutch until after you get most or allof those bolt ons in there. And either right before or right after the H/C installit would really be best to get one for sure. Alot of people go with the LS7 clutch set up. But look into it and pick what is right for you.
3.As far as which heads and cam,, your choices are many and very broad. Do you want quiet and mild? LOUD and wild? or a mix? Like quiet and wild (aka stealth set up)?
4. There are alot of factors also that you need to think about...that affect all of the above: is your car a daily driver or a weekend warrior? Do you want absolutely the best parts or are you on a budget? What about suspension and appearance? Do they take a back seat or do you want to do a little of everything or just focus on straight performance right now? How much HP is enough for you?
Here is a great place to start:
http://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361959 this has got to be one of the best write ups anywhere for starters.
http://ls1sounds.com/true_duals.htm here is a great place to hear what cars sound like with/without cams, and long tubs...various catbacks...etc
Good luck with everything
well if you want a simple trick to get you a **** load of more horses, you can always take out the engine, and bore out the pistons, and replace them with bigger ones, and since the enigne is out you can put the new headers and stuff on that you wanted, also sugest changing thecam shaftfor a stronger one, or a racing one, youll crank outabout 700 more horses
hay guys thanks for the replies and i planned on getting all the bolt on stuff and i want it daily drive during the week and weekend worrier all the other time and i want the cams and sound loud and wild and money is not an factor

nobody is making 1000 horsepower with an all motor LS1

Changing the cam will get you only about 40 extra horses, with a heads and cam, about 75-100.
1) as stated above, do the bolt ons: CAI, long tube headers, bigger cats, a good cat back, LS6 or FAST intake, throttle body, etc. With a good tune you pick up 40 RWHP. You've spent about $2,000 or about $50 per RWHP gained and you've picked up lots of mid range torque, too. Altogether, is is a no brainer: do this first.
2) a good heads an cam kit can add45 RWHP (mild, daily driver) to 100 RWHP (wild, weekend warrior). Cost, if you do the work, is about $ 2500-$5,000 depending. Again, about $50/RWHP. You get more HP, but not a lot of additional mid range torque (particularly if you go wild) with a cam: better at the stripe but actually worse on the daily drive if you go too wild
3) a good stroker short block costs $3500 and gives you about 410 cubes. And you have a bottom end that can take more than the stock engine's limit of around 475 RWHP. Add good heads and cam and so forth and you have $6000 spent and 120+ RWHP and gobs more low end torque. Again, it works out to about $50/RWHP.
4) After the CAI you can fit a supercharger for $5000 without any other mods but a good tune and pick up another 100RWHP and more torque. You are pushing your luck if you have an older high mileage engine, but if its in good shape and you stay below 450 RWHP you should not have serious problemsunless you abuse it Again, about $50-$55/RWHP.

If money is'nt a factor do like lee willis said and build a new engine. Call Texas Speed and get them to build you a low compression 408ci LS1. Then put a procharger kit on it, get it tuned properly and you might be close to that 700 hp mark. Now you have to get a new rear end, new drive shaft, rebuilt tranny, the chasis and suspension to support that much hp, and then you'll have a $50,000 car.
