gears
If you have some money, you could buy a performance rear axle. How much power are you planning on putting out. That is another factor. I'm putting out 510 HP and 495 ft/lbs torque. I have chosen to build up my rear 10 bolt rear axle. I put a 3.73:1 in my 8.5" rear end. It was originally a 2.73:1. It has a posi, and new axle main caps. I used Richmond gears. When you start going through gears, that's when I'd make the call to change the axle to a 12 bolt.
Strange and Moser both make 12 bolts and 9 inchs that will bolt right into a 4 th gen. I thought you were a 6 speed for some reason, now that I know your an auto, I would sugest a stall and some other bolt ons. The auto cars are gentler on the rear ends, not saying you won't break it, but there is less of a chance. I am still on my 10 bolt and run 11's with short times in the 1.5-1.6 range.
