Exclamation ASR / Traction Control - Stuck On - Won't Turn Off

I have a 98 z28 that I just recently purchased. For some reason the ASR will not turn off. I know this because I cannot spin the tires and I can feel the ASR working in the pedals. When I hit the ASR button, nothing happens; no lights turn on or off. Should the ASR button be illuminated (like the fog light button right next to it)? Because the ASR button is not illuminated, but the "ASR OFF" light in the dash is not illuminated either. I'm not sure where to even begin looking for the problem. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

I'm sorry I can't help you with the problem, but I can at least answer your question about the light. When the ASR is on, the light on the ASR button should be on as well. When the ASR is off, the light on the ASR button should be off, but ASR OFF should be illuminated in the dash.

Maybe a fuse or relay problem? Loose wire? You can pull the faceplate off of the dash that has the button on it pretty easily. Take a peak to see if there's something wrong, like a cut wire or something.

If I were you, I would contact the person that I just bought it from and ask them when they first notice this issue, and if they did anything to the car right before it happened. Good luck solving the mystery!

Thanks for the tips sk8rax350. I found the problem. If anybody else ever has this problem, check the turn signal & hazard lights fuses. Both of the fuses were blown and after I replaced them the ASR worked perfectly. I guess the ASR is connected to one of those 2 fuses (not sure which one).

No problem! I'm glad it helped you fix the problem! I was hoping it would be something simple like that, and I'm sure you were too! Now you can do burnouts!

now that the subject's come up I was wondering if it's normal that my z28 doesn't have an ASR button, and whether that means traction control is always on or off

No ASR button means no traction control.

Baldilocks is right. My 98 Z28 didn't have the ASR either, because it was an option.

I don't have the ASR button either in my car but on the dashboard it still appears.

Check your rear wheel sensors. If they are covered in metallic crud, it might cause it. Would cost anything either, just a little time to lift the rear up and remove the rear tires.

My ASR button light burnt out -- anyone replace just the light? Or do I need to get a whole new switch? TIA
