what can Headers do for me?
Depends on what ones you're looking at. I've heard that hooker headers are good ones. I think they'er worht the price. They open the exhuast up alot and will give you better gains out of later mods.
Hooker headers are ok, although a custom header/Y-pipe system is definately better than a set of Hookers. If you're willing to spend the money I'd suggest going with Kooks or Dynatech system, they'll flow much better than the Hookers and will have better fit because they are a tuned custom header. If you're looking to do future internal mods headers are a must, as is a cold air intake.
Yeah, I think in CA only short tubes are allowed for emissions. The reason is that long-tube headers move the cats to far away from the exhaust ports, allowing the exhaust to cool down too much for the catalyst to be 100% effective. Long tubeswould add about 15-20 HP with a good tune, shorttubes only about 10-12.
I've talked to people who actually switch out their long tubes for the original manifolds annually for the inspection and then put them back on afterward. A lot of work (particularly if you don't have a lift) and its not legal, but at least one person in CA I correspnded did it for years.
