Default Transmission Problem

i just purchased an 83 camaro. its automatic and has about 87000 miles on it and was driven by an old woman. i am having a problem when i want to shift to reverse from either park or drive. everytime i shift into reverse, the car stalls and turns off and some of my friends say the transmission could be going bad. is this the problem or is it something else, and if it is the transmission and i need to get a new one, should i go with a manual? i prefer manual much over automatic and i know a few people that work with transmissions that could put one in if needed. the one i was looking at was an 85 camaro 5-speed with about 55000 miles on it and includes everything. is this a good idea if my tranny is bad???

That is something a torque converter would do or the TCC. Have you tried to start in nuetral then shift to drive?
