Default Transmission acting strange

I have another post like this in the LT1 section but it didnt get any hits so I will post here in hopes that someone knows whats going on or if it is an unknown problem. So I own a 1996 Z28 6 Speed and since like two days ago 3rd and 4th gear have been acting strange....at first it wouldnt even come out of 4th gear but it does now...but when shifting into 3rd or 4th there is a lot of grinding and I mean alot...I installed a short throw shifter a couple months ago but I dont know if this caused it or even what the problem is but its getting annoying and im afraid something is going to give if i dont get it fixed....even if you dont know whats going on thank you for taking the time to read my post...

Check your linkage adjustment, and put in all the pieces that came with the kit. May be trying to engage more than one gear at a time.

i am not a mechanic by any means. had a 79 mustang and was speed shifting and missed a gear. i was TOLD that i had bent the forks for 3rd gear. never had it again. were you getting on it or casual driving? if you forced it...prolly not good. again that was many many years ago and sorry if i'm out of line here.

sounds like your syncros are going out. try a double clutch shift from 4th to 3rd and see if it grinds the same amount.

I wasnt speed shifting at the time it happened but I do speed shift when I get on it..I was casually driving one night and it was fine..next morning took it to town and 4 th gear stuck...it wouldnt even come out of 4th when i tried forcing but I eventually got it to quit, so now it just grinds 3rd and 4th...I double clutched and at first when i was doing it it was going into the gears smoothly about the 5th time it started grinding and both gears seemed to grind about the same amount....Thanks for all the advice guys I really appreciate all of you taking the time to post answers...

The joys of beating up on a car, they don't come cheap. Looks like you tranny will have to be dismantled.
