POS wont fire up
Ok, well i just got done rebuilding the top end of the motor on my 305.... the heads were crap, i put on some 350 882 heads that ive had laying around, i had to re do the valve seats and stuff on the heads. I replaced the lifters, put on headers, all new gaskets and everything.
Here is the thing, ive re set the damn timing so many times and the car still wont fire, the timing has to be correct, the motor sort of fires, it makes a hollow popping noise, almost like if you drop a big rock into water. The car is making spark, its getting fuel, i can see flames come out the exhaust. I dont know what the hell is wrong or what should check anymore.

Sounds like the old 180 out trick. Pull the valve cover on the left side & turn engine till both intake and exhaust valves on #1 cyl are closed. Turn crank to TDC, make sure that both valves are still closed. Check distributor & make sure rotor is pointing to #1 plug. This should get the timing close enough for the engine to run.

Its soo strange though, i mean the car sounds like its just about to fire up, but it wont....

[X(] also i know it may sound stupid but what firing order are you using? why did you replace the heads? the reason i ask is 305's did have some problems with flattening camshafts and really dont like to run once this happens

I set the valve lash pretty close, the cam is an aftermarket flat tippet cam, the heads have somee really stiff springs and 1.6 rockers.
The reason for changing of heads was to check the bottom end, the car was running like crap earlier, it looks like someone rebuilt the bottom end of the motor about 100k mi ago.
Distributor is just oe replacement, the car is getting spark, i took out the #1 plug and grounded it to see if it was sparking and it was.
Im tired of messing with the car for now, mebey ill get a customer at work and will be able to chime in on the issue for me.

Hydraulic lifters, i had them kind of tight originally, but they are definatly primed up now, i loosened up the valve lash after that.
I just got home from work, im going to check the compression after i take a nap.
