Default Newbie needs help!

I have a 1976 Camaro with a 350. Here is my situation: I was planning on performing an oil change, however, someone advised me not to do this because he said that since the car was most likely not taken care of properly before I bought it I should not perform an oil change because it would get rid of metal fibers or something inside the oil and would actually do more harm than good. I do not know what I should do...has anyone heard of this before?

Also, my car seems to burn oil and when I start it up I get a puff of smoke but it otherwise runs fine. Any suggestions as to what to do for this problem as well?

Thanks for any help.

Whoewver told you that has no idea of what he/she is talking about. Change the oil and get the crud out of the engine. The puff of blue smoke at startup is probably due to worn vave guide seals. If there is little oil burning, don't worry about the smoke.

Alright, thanks. I changed the oil shortly after that post after hearing several times that that person was whacked.

another possible solution to your smoke problem could be some sludge(don't know what condition this motor is in) clogging your oil return holes in your heads. sometimes after sitting these clog and force the oil where it doesn't want to go. a quick remedy is taking the valve covers off and looking in the corners of the heads. sometimes all that is needed is a wire coat hanger

that is your best case scenario
