need help with 396 question... FAST !!
I own a 1968 Camaro SS 396 Camaro that is being restored right now. I found an engine for it that is date coded to a 1968 396. On the side of the engine it is stamped: truck (under that is has PASS and high perf.) What I need to know is : Would this engine have come in a 1968 Camaro ? I was wondering becuase it has truck stamped on the block as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thank you in advance !!

P.S. The engie will be selling pretty quick, that is why I posted it as needing info fast. thanks.

a 396BB is a 396BB whether or not its in a truck or a ferarri. what i mean is whether its the one originally from a camaro or from a truck, you can still set it up to be the same engine. im pretty sure 69 camaros did have a line with 396's. i dont know if i answered your question i didnt really understand it, hope i helped.

oooh i see, alright EA you will have to look up your casting numbers. you can find a casting number website, or post them up here and someone can look them up for you and tel you if your 396 came from a camaro.

Tim he is wondering if the engine would be the same as one offered in a Camaro, meaning is it a "correct numbers matching engine". I cannot answer this though, but I bet you could run the numbers off the block and find out.

The numbers wont tell you what it came out of though, just what the engine was and the year(s) it came in. The numbers on the block do cross to a 1968-69 396 engine. I went ahead and bought it Saturday and will go to Atlanta tomorrow to get it. Thanks for the help guys.
Anybody needing a 350 engine with vortec heads ? 425HP With only the best parts used. Over $5000 invested, I will sell it for $3000. It has never been on the road, only broken in on the dyno and cranked now and then. I can email pics. Ready for a show car - Chromed out and professionally painted.

the engine casting numbers will tell you. type in Big block chevy casting numbers in google and they should give you some sites to visit. there they will tell yyou where that block is from and what apps it was for. Good luck

If I remamber right, the big block used in big trucks was a tall deck block, making the physical size larger than that of a regular big block, and also making it hard to find performance manifolds to fit on it. The good thing about it is that they can take longer strokes or longer rods than regular blocks.
