Depends what you want to use the car for. A small block will put out that kind of power but won't be very streetable. A big block over 500" will put out that kind of power and still be a nice streetable engine. You can look through various catalogs for engines that will make that kind of power and decide from there.

Where do you live? I have a guy that can do it here in Fayetteville, NC. He just built my engine and it is a screamer. I will be getting it dynoed this weekend. He built me a 383 stroker with all the top of the line parts.

I got a great deal on mine for around $3500 and it has the best of everything. He pretty much did mine for cost. The guy that I talked with said that if you wanted a race motor like you are talking you can expect to pay between $5-$7000. That would be the best of everything. The machine shop who did my motor which does dirt track racing and their cars are pushing about 600+hp. You might just go with, like a real good set of heads and then build a good short block. You can buy all the components for one. I would strongly recommend eagle crankshaft and eagle rods. I have the keith black pistons that were treated. Get the best and you get what you pay for. I like the 383 because of the amount of torque you get which helps you off the line. I hope this helps and sorry it too so long to respond but I was on a airborne operation all day yesterday.

Thats what I would do if you are mechanically inclined. It will be much cheaper in the long run. Plus its an older model camaro unlike mine with all the electronic crap. Mine will still pass emissions. I wanted to make sure everything was done properly. Good luck with it. The only other thing I would recommend is ensure that what ever internals you go with make sure you get them all balanced at a good shop and ensure that everything works well together to achieve the hp that you are trying to get.

I just got done with my 383 and it dyno'd at 476 at the rear wheels. I'm sure it's at 500 at the flywheel and I drive mine as well as race. I have a 70 camaro. I bought an Eagle forged steel crank, their H-beam rods, JE 10.7:1 forged pistons and run a comp cam XE294H w/1.6 magnum rockers. I am also running AFR heads topped off with a victor jr and a demon 750 mechanical secondaries. I will tell you that it does not have the best street manners but is drivable and fun to drive! I think with machine work and parts i spent around $5400. My car is plenty fast for me and I'll have to let ya know what times it runs as soon as it warms up here in KY. Hope this helps you some.

get a solid bottom end and put some nice heads like air flow reasearch heads and you should have some serious hp.
I have some stock 691 heads on my new engine. it puts about 350 hp. with a 30 bore and flat top pistons. Put some great parts in it and it should do what you want. or a supercharger would be sweet. good luck. whatever you do, it will be nice.
