Default Invisible Fuel

I've had this problem with my Z for awhile now, just never done anything about it. About 3/4 of the time with the car running, I hold 6 PSI fuel pressure, but my fuel filter (Purolator F20011) is literally empty, there's no fuel in it. Sometimes the fuel filter is about half full, but that's it.

The tank was just dropped and cleaned with a new pickup installed. I had this problem before I did this. The fuel line was redone with Aeroquip stainless braid from the tank to the pump and was routed along the cross member to avoid heat from the headers, so vapor locking isn't the issue.

I have a Jegs 80 GPH mechanical pump on it. I'm wondering if all the crap that was in my tank (was going through a fuel filter a week, with the filter AFTER the pump, bad I know) might have damage the diaphragm in the pump. It confuses the hell out of me, because I have good fuel pressure, but as we all know pressure doesn't always mean there's volume present.

I think I'm going to put a factory pump on it and see if it changes anything. I also have a severe hesitation that I always figured was in the carb, but this has me second guessing.

Advise?
