Go Big?
Ok guys, i'm sick of my little 5.0L 3-oh-why so i'm looking for a nice 350 for a winter project. however, my buddy told me his friend has a chevelle with the original 454 in it and that he only wants $500 for the engine. he didnt know how many miles were on it and he had to check but if its reasonable and i could hear it run first, i'd be an idiot not to buy it right? next question what would i have to get for my 84 berlinetta? I need a new trans anyway my 700r4's crappin out. What tranny would you guys recommend? Probably a tougher rear end? Or not so much? New driveshaft? Frame ties? Sorry these are really vague questions i'm just trying to weigh out a nice 350 as opposed to all i'd need on top of the actual engine. Any input you guys have would be awesome, i wanna crush some ricers!
You can buy a new 290 gross horse power 350ci engine for $2000-$2200 at your local dealership with a 2 year warrantee that will bolt right into your car. They also have more expensive 350s and big blocks also.
With the 454 you would have to replace your front springs and other parts which I am not an expert on.
Find out what year the 454 is. If it is from the later 454 Chevelle period like 72 and hasn't been rebuilt it isn't as "fire breathing" as, for example, 1970.
