frame broke at steering box
Hello I'm a new member just got an 85 berlinetta with a 305. car not rusted but has alot of miles. can the frame be welded there. what could cause this tombrake? Bad steering box? other? thanks Dan
I've heard that cracks near the steering box are common with 3rd Gens for some reason, but I would recommend taking the car to an experienced welder/bodyshop for a more accurate diagnosis. It would be tough to give you an accurate diagnosis without seeing the problem in person.
Also, check the rear roof pillars behind the window, and you'll probably see some hairline fractures as well, caused by stress; another common 3rd Gen problem. My dad has these fractures with his 1989 GTA. I don't think it's serious structural damage though, because I have seen A LOT of 3rd Gens with these fractures. You'd probably just want to get some subframe connectors and other mods to stiffen the structure.
Anyway, before I start rambling, get the car TOWED on a FLATBED to a shop. If the frame is cracked, you don't want to make things any worse.
