I know this a camaro forum but the guys at the monte carlo forum are not helping. My girlfriend bouht a 01 montewith th 3.8 motor and it overheats. The cooling fans are not turning on would any of you guys have a guess as to why

 

check fuse, if good check for power at fuse then fan motor plug when motor is hot but not boiling over.
relay could be stuck
fan motor open
do you have check engine light on? coolant temp sensor shorted

No check engine light is on and the fans do not come on when the ac is on. Already triedchanging the relays

 

Check the coolant level in the radiator. From what I have been told, the sensor that turns the fans on have to have coolant running across them in order to determine the temp. If it is just hot air/steam, they will not energize the fans. Disconnect the electrical connections to the fan motors and use a fused jumper wire and touch to a battery to see if fan motors turn. You will need one wire for the positive side and one for the neg side of battery and run them to the two wires for each motor. Hope that is not confusing.

And when you say it overheats, how hot is it getting?

 

Do check the coolant level as osduck5 said. The overflow reservoir is a good indicator of fluid level when its hot. That reservoir should be at the full line level for hot. When the engine is flat cold, the coolant level line should be at the cold mark. If the reservoir is empty then check rad it is likely low. The fans should kick on with the ac though.

How many miles? It seems that the relay on some of the early 2000 model GM products were under-spec and failed early. But do all the other easylow cost checks first. Lets us know what you found.

 

checked the level this morning and it was good. It has 80xxx miles. It will go all the way to 260 degrees if it left standing still. The fans aren't coming on with the ac the fans are going to be checked tomorrow hopefully it's the motors. I am going to change the thermostat and the temp sensor. Coolant in the resivour is over full at the moment but it has stayed constant

 

well lets hope its not the motors and it will likely not be. sensor or relay if the other possibilities have been ruled out. Yeah don't let it go to 260 and then drive it, could start detonating

 

Why hope not the motors? I am just curious because it seems to be a reletive easy fix. Cause if it isn't the fans and the sensor dosent work the only other thing I can think of would be a PCM connection problem.

 

You meant the fan motors right? They could be expensive. A relay is a much easier fix and less expensive, then the sensor.

 

Yea I meant the motors. I replaced the relays and nothing happened
