clunking rear end need sugestions
I should have some money coming in a month. So I am going to start looking into fixing my rear end.
this is what im thinking of. Powertrax 1930-LR
any opinions on this.
Quote:
The Powertrax Lock-Right and Performance Lockers' straight-line performance is equal to a solid spool axle, yet automatically unlocks to allow full differentiation in turns. The lockers also reduce the excessive noise, tire wear, and drivetrain damage associated with other lockers. Made in the U.S.A., Powertrax lockers replace the spider gears in your differential carrier without affecting your ring and pinion settings. The whole job can be done in your driveway with common hand tools in a couple of hours. A carrier is not included.
i will also change bearings and seals.
what do you guys think?

What is wrong with your rear? this replaces only a small part of your rear. That is a part that very rarly goes bad. Also I think that is only for non-posi rears. AKA Open Case.

when i bought the car the guy i bought it from said it is a posi but everyone that else that has looked at it says it is not posi.
as for what is wrong im not entirely sure. i had my uncle and his friend look at it and there is to much play if i pull and push the wheel and if i move it up and down.

Yeah, that's an open diff you have there. What you are experiencing is excessive slop....worn bearings, too much play in the gear mesh, etc. You'd be better off finding a good used replacement (if you can) that doesn't have an ungodly high amount of miles on it.
Edit: I'm not sure if a posi was standard issue in an 84 Z28, would hafta look that up.

all of the junk yards have rear ends that are 160k and up.
correct it is just the picture. i made sure that when opened the case this last time about a month ago i had my uncle look at it too and they said the spider gear's looked ok and that the ring and pinion looked good.
