Default Best Synthetic Motor Oil

Now I've been convinced that Mobil 1 is a good synthetic motor oil, but have seen the other brands and was wondering how they stack up.

[&:]because i dont have the billions for research and development i kinda have to go with whats out there and consider who uses it as a gauge for whats good and what isnt. GM has found mobil one to be good enough for the camaro's and corvettes along with alot of the aftermarket speed and performance gurus. mercedes is also using and on a 10000 mile change interval. royal purple is one that shows up often as well as amsoil which i believe was the original synthetic. i would and do use each one of these depending on application, price and availability. so pick your favorite kurt

I use Penzoil synthetic. It's reasonably priced and I've used Penzoil since I can remember. Is there that much of a difference? Is one really better than the other? Does anyone know if there is a website that does a unbias comparison? I would like to know.

[&:] viscosity would seem more a preference thing. the manufacturers tend to go with low viscosity numbers to eeek out the least resistence for better mileage numbers. i prefer higher viscosities in hopes its providing a little more protection and sticking to the parts better. ive never seen any proof that a certain viscosity can cause damage over another in average situations. id rather have my stuff over protected to be able to handle the higher heat and stress loads when i do subject them to some punishment than come up short. i also might use higher viscosities for engines with more miles maybe more as a bandaid for oil loss and worn parts in hopes it helps. as for the extreme ends of the spectrum like operation in constant freezing or super hot conditions i might taylor my viscosities to the situation otherwise pick your fave in the 0-50 range thats my two cents kurt

Well my 2000 Camaro only has 42,000 miles on it. I decided to go with Mobil 1 5w-30 with a Mobil 1 oil filter. Got it all from Wal-Mart for $30.
