BACKFIRING!!

BACKFIRING!!
I have a 1992 camaro rs with 160,000 miles on it. It's been kept in good condition and runs like a charm. The starter went out recently and a friend "jumped" the starter(his words) with a screwdriver and drove it home. We replaced the starter and the problems really started. The car started only to proceed to backfire and die. this went on for a while with the car not staying started for any length of time and constantly backfiring. We replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor all to no avail. Everything was running fine until we replaced the starter. We're lost and are trying not to take it to a shop. Any help would be appreciated. A friend of a friend claims that the computer may need to be reset, but we havent heard of this or even how to do it.

RE: BACKFIRING!!
My 80 firebird was having the same problem except that we did not replace the starter. My uncle came over and ajusted the timing (twisting the distributer cap) and then I thightend down the cap. The problem is solved. But to do a good job with the timing, you need to get a timing light. The problem is that the firing is not at a correct rate so some cylinders fire while they have too much gas and others fire when they have too little gas. Try ajusting the timing and you should be set. Good Luck
