Default Alternator Wiring Help With 95 Z28 LT1

This might sound like a stupid question but, how many wires are supposed to be hooked to the alternator of a 1995 Z28 6 speed? From what I can see, there is only a positive wire that goes from the battery to the alternator (and of coursedown to the starter.) I have heard of one wire alternators but this just does not make sense? I have looked in my at my Haynes manual thoroughly and I cannot find a detailed description anywhere. I cannot even find a pic on the internet showing the backside of a Z28 alternator. Here is a picture of my motor with a picture of the frontside of my alternator http://s149.photobucket.com/albums/s...t=100_4703.jpg .. (just copy and paste the link into your browser.) The positive wire that you see is the only think hooked to it. (unless thre is something underneath that I cannot see? Thanks

There should be two RED wires from the alternator (both 8 gage). One wire at the BATT terminal connecting to the + terminal on the battery, and one from the L terminal going through a grommet and connector to the instrument panel. Connaction to ground is through the alternator mounting bolts. The P, I, & S terminals are not used.

Thanks for the response Pete. Would one of these wires not being hooked up inhibit the alternator from charging? I do have a red wire that is not hooked up but it is not 8 gauge. Do you have any pics of the backside of the alternator so I can see what it is supposed to look like? Thanks

The wire to the battery is attached by a screw, the L wire is plugged into a spade terminal at the back of the alternator. The wire on the L terminal is used to power the internal voltage regulator when the ignition key is in the run condition.

http://s149.photobucket.com/albums/s...t=100_4702.jpg .. Do you see the red wire sticking up near the left side injectors? That used to be hooked to I believe was the under side of the alternator. Is that the spade wire? Other than that I did not see anything else that might have been hooked to it. Let me know if I am on to something? Thanks

That may be the one, if it is breaking out of the harness going to the AC compressor.Check for 12 voltbetween the end of the wire and ground when the key is on. If volt is OK, use ohmmeter between end of wire and + battery terminal, withkey on you should read around 500 Ohm. If both readings are good, that would be the wire.Depending on type ofalternator used, there is either a spade type connector sticking out, or a cavity for a plug to stick in. If you have both use the cavity and then splice the wire to a connector that fits into the cavity. Best bet would be to look at another car like yours and do a "stare and compare".
