96 Z won't start!
Ok here's the scoop. I have a 96 Z 28 with 105,xxx all stock. About two weeks ago it died on me while I was driving. Iput some gas in it and tried to start it, no luck, I came back an hour later and it was just fine.I thought it was out of gas because my gauge is a little off, but that's not the case nowbecause I know it has 3/4 of a tank in it. When I turn the key it cranks over just fine, just doesn't want to fire. Fuel pump? There is a check engine light on, but I haven't been able to find someone with a scaner to see what the code is. Any ideas?
I can't say that I've ever really had a tune-up on it, I've ony had the car for 2 months. When I bought it I put a new fuel filter, thermostat, belt, and ran some sea foam through it. I guess I need to find someone with a scanner willing to come over and check it out.
Last night I tried to start the car again just to see what would happen and it fired up for about 2 seconds, I also notice that the alarm didn't go off on my car when I opened the door and didn't put the key in within so many seconds. Then I locked the car and then unlocked it and didn't put the key in for a few seconds and the alarm went off, but the car wouldn't start. Does this sound like the security system could be what's not letting the car start?
You can get a rapair manual at the same place that has the part, usually autozone or advance auto. If haynes is the only thing you can findd its ok. I prefer chiltons. You will learn how to replace the fuel pump form there. I would get the check engine light looked at first though. Could be something simple.
The security systemon these cars have been known to go haywire. You might get some info if you called the local Gm service dept and see if they could tell you how to reset the system.

P1441 is the code, this would make since if the fuel pump was bad. I bought a Haynes repair book when I first bought the car and it is very handy, but the only way they show to replace the pump is to drop the rear end and gas tank.
i got this link from 02stang... fuel pump exchange without taking everything out...

Before you change the pump, verify that the pump itself is bad and not some electrical problem such as the pump relay or wiring. There is a test/prime connector on the passenger side of the car above the fender well. With a jumper wire connect 12 Volt from the battery to the test connector. If the pump now works, there is an electrical problem, if the pump is dead, then you can be sure that the pump is bad.
