Does the car stay running if you disconnect the battery?

Did you check to make sure no lights are stuck on when you park it...glove box, underhood, trunk?
What was faulty on the old alternator, poor output or an internal short?
You can disconnect the positive battery cable overnight and see if the battery holds it's charge. Sometimes a bad battery will work as long as it has a fresh charge, but can discharge on it's own overnight.
Or, you may have a short somewhere. Disconnect the positive cable at the battery, and connect a volt meter between the cable and battery post. Check your reading, then start to pull your accessory fuses one at a time until you see a deflection in the meter.

Let's back up and start from the begining.

The alternator failed and is now replaced. The battery dies you mention. You haven't mentioned if the battery has been properly tested yet. I don't care if it's new, a month old or five years old. Testing the battery is the first thing to do with any electrical problem. It is possible a faulty battery with a bad cell caused the death of the alternator and may kill the new one. Even charging it and leaving the cables off over night you may still have a no start in the morning if the battery is bad.

And I would highly suggest never taking the battery cables off with the car running, you run the risk of making the alternator full field and burn up. Even a new unit. This used to be a ok thing looooong ago but with the light wieght alternators and electrical circuits in cars from the 70's on it's a problem waiting to happen.

Well glad you found it.
But I will second everything Williesrepair said. Specialy that part about Not disconnecting the battery. I cringed when I read that. I thought cplthomas knew better.

Mike, Willie. Thanks for the correction to my post. I didn't even realize I wrote it that way. I was more confirming what I thought he meant though. It should have read something like - "are you saying you have ran the car with the battery disconnected?" - at least thats what I meant. Anyways, I did learn something because of this confusion....I was going the same direction as camaro 69 with some accessory being left on, but it was a bad cell intsead.
