Default 94 Lt1: getting engine codes

Hey All, im having trouble pulling codes from my 94 Z28. I short the top two right terminals A and B with the tool autozone gave me, but when i put the key into the on position and instert the tool into terminals A and B, all that happens is the shift light comes on and nothing flashes. any ideas what i am doing wrong?? i really wanna get this code since when i start the car it runs fine in idle for about 8 seconds then the tachometer starts to freak out jumping up and down, but the engine doesnt rev any higher than normal when it jumps up, but when it jumps down the car stars to shake and wants to stall and this will keep hapening till the engine actual does stall out. any ideas?? i can only think its a fuel problem or the computer is throughing codes(or maybe bad TPS sensor). But the first time i started it today it idled fine for about 5 mins on its own and with me reving it and letting it back down to idle again, but then it started doing what i described above. any help will be greatly apreciated. thanks
Also anyone recomend a good scanning tool that is relatively cheap and effective?? (pictures of 12ADL pins below +dash when shorted)

The 94 you can't short the terminals since it has an OBDII connector but has OBDI codes. Check out the sticky at the top of the LT1 section, there's some instructions to make your own, or a link to get a cable so you can get the codes.

Ya but i am still confused because i do have a 12 pin and not a 16 pin ALDL shown in the homemade adpater. I just want to get the engine codes the cheapest way possible. if you have anymore info on it that would be great
