86 IROC code 44 lean exhaust stumped

My son has an 86 IROC 305 MPFI V8. One morning he had a problem on his way to school
from idle to 2000 RPM under light throttle pressure the engine cuts out and backfires( hope the MAF sensor isn't damaged cost 300 bucks) floor it and it seems to generate plenty of power
out on the interstate it runs fine, run it thru the gears and it seems to run strong
some of the things I have done so far include:
replacer the fuel filter which was restricted
replace the o2 sensor, and re-replace it after code 44 lean exhaust came up again
replaced the spark plugs which were white indicating a lean exhaust condition
adjusted the TPS sensor to read .06 VDC, it was at about .04, the engine did seem to run better with the TPS disconnected, I am assuming it put the ECM in limp mode
disconnected the ECM plug and put it back, seemed to run a little better after that, but still cuts out
A friend suggested the EGR valve, In Chiltons manual they indicate a faulty EGR can cause performance problems at light throttle settings
the EGR valve on this model is not accessible per the book, it appears to be controlled by the EGR solenoid, I pulled the vacuum line off the EGR solenoid and the engine kind of chugged during acceleartion
Any ideas on troubleshooting this problem would be greatly appreciated

Check your fuel pressure. Is 0.6V what the TPS is supposed to be set at? I guess it may be different on the camaros, but on my mustang the ideal voltage is approximately .98V.

Check your fuel pressure with a gauge at the fuel rail, check your MAP sensor as they can go bad and cause all sorts of weird problems. Temporarily unplug the MAF sensor, this will force the engine into open loop & see how it runs. If it runs OK in this mode, it is a good indicator of a bad sensor. If it still runs bad, the EGR may be in trouble. EGR should be open at high vacuum (part throttle operation) and forced closed at idle and WOT
