84-86 Berlinetta Vehicle Speed Sensor Problems

My car is setting off the Vehicle Speed Sensor error code. Unfortunately, the Sensor is no longer made or available for this car. I've called the manufacturers, suppliers and retailers. Maybe one is sitting on a dusty shelf somewhere, but I haven't found it. The speed sensor was only made for the Berlinetta and only those 3 short years. Anyone else come up with another solution?
Here are the symptoms if anyone thinks it might be something else. The car runs fine when I start it and drive. It continues to run fine when I get on the 65 mph freeway. But, when I decelerate on the off ramp, pop, on goes the light and the code reads VSS. Also, it has a hard time holding idle up and wants to die. It holds idle fine until after the code light comes on.
I read somewhere out there on the internet that the Idle Air Valve which adjusts the amount of air that gets by the throttle plate to adjust the idle may actually set off a VSS code, and there is no code for the valve itself. But, I wouldn't expect the state of the car at 65 mph slowing to 45 mph would be impacted by the Idle Air Valve. Also, if I don't go over 45/50 mph, I can drive for a much longer time before the light comes on from slowing down.
Any thoughts would be most welcome.

When you let off the gas, the throttle goes closed, so then theIAC valve is supposed to come open. If it doesn't have air your engine wants to die. The IAC valve helps smooth the slowing down process. Check www.rockauto.com for your VSS. I just checked and it shows some listed. They also show Idle Air Control Valves.

All the computer controled vehicles use a VSS. When the speedo is a cable operated on it is a yellow box behind the cluster. Electronic speedos just use the eletricla pic up. Like on my 91 it is where a speedo cable would go on the tranny. But my 84 Z28 had the yellow box on the back of the cluster.
Do you have regular gauges or is it a digital speedo. When I installed Autometer gauges in my 84 I used a Hall Effect unit between the cable and the tranny to replace the VSS on the old cluster.

I think I found the part.
Did you try year one? I just looked this up and found this link. Not sure if this is what you need but it's worth a shot.

Thanks everyone. That's actually not the part. I have now tracked down the actual GM part number - and to make matters worse, there are two parts with the same part number - but different "stamping numbers". I've contacted GM, Borg Warner, Pep Boys, NAP and three Camaro specialists. All of them have said they no longer exist. I guess this version was used on the Belinettas with the Star Wars display only - 2.5 years and limited numbers at that.
That said, Year One did find it listed at another company's web site: http://www.tomco-inc.com. I've sent them an e-mail to confirm that they actually have it. Even if they don't, they seem like a good source of parts that I figured you'd all want to know about.
It looks like I can make an adapter and use one of the other speed sensors. My only problem is that I have not been able to find out how many pulses they all put out per revolution. I found that the "early TPI and all TBI systems" have 2 pulses and the "late TPI and early LTI systems" have 4 pulses. Does anyone know what TPI, TBI and LTI systems ?

Just a heads up for future use. Tomco has the worst rebuilt carbs. Last one I ever tried I open the box and looked at the carb and there was a huge gap between the top of it and the main body..."Factory Tested" MY A$$!

I called for the items I needed when intalling Autometer in my 84 Z28 and started telling Rodger Luckow what Iwas doingand he finished and told me every thing I needed.
If all else fails you may be able to adapt a buffer or DRAC from another vehicle. 90+has electric speedos and there were S10's with digital dashes along with many other model GMs'
Basicly all the buffer DRAC is going to do is convert the pulses into a contant voltage to make a reading on the speedo
