1984 starter problem

ok i have a 1984 camaro and we just got a new battery, we checked the atlernator and then we got anew starter we put it in and it was catching the fly wheel so we shimmed every which way to try and get it to work and we cant are we just dumb or is there mabye somthing somone knows to heelp me and my friend out

You might just be dumb. Mybe you should try another starter. I have seen them from rebuilders with the cone all out a whack. Some times you would need to just put a shim under one bolt and not the other to make some of these crapy ones work.

yea we were thinking that so we broke the new one and then took it back and got another and we had the same problem so we pop started the car and it started so its not the fly wheel and we have shimmed both bolts both ways towards the fly wheel, away , up down every way its fustrating

Is it not engaging or screaching? Did you hook the wires up on the correct terminals?
