Just when you think you have lots of horsepower...

They're currently reevaluating some of the rules on how far the cars run due to the unfortunate death of Kalita last season. The end of last season they were only running 1000 ft. I'm not sure if they're still doing that for all tracks this season or if they've determined which tracks it's safe to run the full 1/4 or not, I guess I'll find out in person in July. I do love the Mile High Nationals...

lets see, 8000hp in a car that's around 2500lbs (i'm guessing, i don't know that actual weights) compared to 100000+ lbs of thrust trying to lift an aircraft that weights in at over 42 tons

ls1s13: No one actually knows how much hp they truly make. Nobody ever strapped one to a dyno. Not because they can't, But because to get an accurate measurement would require more time than the engine can handle without overheating. It only takes about 10 seconds of accelerating to overheat one of 'em...which is why they do the quarter in 4.

What's more impressive than either of these in my mind is Pro-Stock. You can't run any FI, you have to run a carburetor, you're limited to 500ci, you have to run a 4 speed, you have to have NHRA regulated 118 octane fuel. They make ~1200 HP and run high 6's, that's sweet and it takes mad skillz on the track.

All top-fuel is fuel injected. I was talking about pro-stock which can't run Forced Induction and have to run carbs etc. I just think it's more impressive. Pro-stock cars have the best and most expensive heads on any car at the drag strip.
