Default scratched the lt1 plan

I was considering putting a lt1 into my current 96 3.8 Camaro but after seeing how much it would cost I'm considering just doing a 3.8 rebuild. How much approximately will it cost me to build a completly forged motor? I know that most people just drop these out of the bottom. I'm considering just doing it in my garage at home so how many hours approximately would it take 3 guys (that are pretty experienced working on cars)to take that whole front end of the car apart? I plan on putting in a good cam, ceramic headers, and chipping it out. Would it be safe to use my current 160k mi tranny or do you think it would blow with the power of the forged motor? If anyone has any other recommendations I'm very open to them, all I've ever done on my car is changed the oil, Magnaflow cat-back, flushed cooling system, and disc brake job.
