this is starting to get worse and worse!
is there any anti-freeze in it?
does it seem like it is boiling over at any time as it "gets worse" lol
is it a clutch fan?
does it spin slowly, pulling little air when the engine is hot and idling?
is there oil in the pan?

but i'm still stuck on the part of the " wires job " making it worse.
try and isolate the cylinder that is miss-firing buy removing one plug wire at a time and installing a spark tester one wire at a time at the plug .
1-to see if there is spark at the end of the wire
2- to see if it gets worse or same when unpluging a wire

you could get zapped with high voltage so use the spark tester method
i've taken many hits and still live and am not affraid to pull of a plug wire with the engine running.
with a good set of vacuum hose pliers or plug wire pliers, it's the best way to do a cylinder balance test on the old models like those.

if you can find out what cylinder is giving you trouble or which ones ...
it might give you more ideas

like if it's two cylinders , side by side , in the firing order .
or if it is just one cylinder , swap out that wire with another your sure is good, then the plug, then compression.
but seroiusly , now it sounds more and more like your motor is dying!
i hope not for your sake.

Get the temp gauge working, it can tell you a lot. It is there for more than decoration.
What do you mean by thumping? With the engine running, put your ears by the exhaust. Do you hear any popping or sputtering? Could be valves. I've even seen a bad sealing (only when hot) intake manifold gasket act like you're describing, without any coolant loss. I don't spose you can put up a video?

i would say to check your vacuum advance hose if its cracked up it will cause that not so much at idle but while driving.

I think maybe the question meant to ask was, do you have any antifreeze in the oil, or oil in the antifreeze? That would be an indication of a leaking head or intake gasket, cracked head, etc.

The 4 inboard intake manifold bolt holes on each head are open to the lifter valley. You want to clean the oil off and put RTV on the bolt threads to keep the oil from working up the bolts.
