Buy or Build
Ok my 79 has been leaking oil from what I believe is the rear main seal. Second I believe there may be some miner wear and possible damage from the blown head gasket and intake manifold gasket. So here is my question with only 1500 bucks at the moment I can’t decide wheatear to find a used 350 or 383 or just start from scratch and build a new one. I am deploying to Iraq in January and wanted to take here to the track a few times before then. This is not a street car and is being set up for a track a once a mouth take out of the box kind of thing. My budget is only 300 bucks a mouth on the car. My goal is a solid 345-385 crank horse power with room for a power adder latter on. The car is set up with a 350 turbo trany and 4.11 posi rear end. I would like to see her run low 14 on all engine.
For the time being I am going to pull out the old 350 and dropping a crate 350 in just so I can enjoy her will im home. The new plan involves a mild 396 and a new trany possibly a T56. I decided to scratch the SB idea and go with something with a little more fire power and something deferent. The BB will help me get to my goals easier than the SB and personally I enjoy a good rat engine over the mouse. I am still going to run a set of 202 heads with my intake carb set up for the time being. But plan on starting with a fresh BB when I come home for 3 weeks half way into my deployment. Until then a crate 350 will run her around on the weekends. I will post some pics and times with the new SB in the next 2 weeks.
