Default alternator brackets

what is the best aftermarket alternator bracket to buy.i have a 454 in a 78 camaro and everytime i get up around 6000 rpm's it throws the alt. belt.i have all the big block brackets.i've tried shimming the the bracket at the water pump and the block and it still throws the belt.it looks to me that the bracket from the waterpump to the bottom of the alt. needs to be alittle longer.i compared it to the bracket that is for the small block and it is alittle longer,so i believe it is for a big block.i seen summitt has one, which one do you recommend

This is an old Chevy problem that goes back to when they got their engines to spin faster than most other brands. The way the factory fixed it, was to install pulleys with very deep grooves. This kept the belt from flying off, but didn't keep it from flipping over. You may want to check with Summit as they list a good assortment of pulleys, brackets, etc, for big blocks.

timmythewop turned me on to this. maybe it will help your problem ... http://www.blackmountainprecision.com/sb6.htm ... i didn't try these parts but, i had the same problem with my small block. tried a couple different aftermarket brackets. nothing worked. i finally decided to get an electric water pump and a dual battery. did away with all the pulleys, belts, and alternator. i guess i gained about 25 horsepower out of that upgrade. the only drawback is i have to charge my batterys. Sick

definite deep groove pulleys and a quality belt. also once a belt is thrown once it is no good and much more apt to be thrown again

Make sure the alternator bracket has at least 3 mounting points, this keeps it from wobbling. Belt alignment is the next thing to address. Make sure the belt is straight. Shim things a bit if You have to for proper alignment. Then the belt should not be overtight. Too loose or tight will cause problems.
