Default 350 010 2 bolt

Looking atpurchasing a 350 2 bolt bare block not been bored for $75. My question is.. is the 010 designation significant or not I have heard both ways the price isnt a big deal but I dont want any more junk laying around.

If it is a 4.010 bore it might have been honed before. So when you bore it out .030 over it'll really be .040 over. So if you want a 4.030 STANDARD .030 over, you'll have to have them machine it .020.

The 010 is supposed to be a designation for a high nickel block which in theory is stronger, the problem is I am not sure the 010 code means anything or not I have heard some say it does and others say it doesnt????

When You bore a block, You should have it rough bored to see what size pistons You need. Then You use the manufacturers recommended clearances for the final hone. If You want the best finish hone, find a machine shop that has torque plates for You engine and can hone with the proper stone for the type of piston rings being used.

I picked up the block today it has some surface rust on it so I ended up getting it for $40.00 it has the 010 and the 020 codes under the timing cover which is supposed to be a high nickel high tin block, I ran the other code numbers 14W258258 and VO123CMA and I think narrowed it down to a 1974 1975 nova (it was supposed to be out of a grand prix??) It should be a 350 that had a th350 trans with a 2 bbl carb it is a two bolt main. I may be kind of negitive but why would gm cast a high nickle high tin 2 bolt 2 bbl engine??

Anyhow we plan on getting it cleaned and crack checked and if we can sonic checked and go from there I am leaning towards a 383 just because I think it is the cheapest way to hp for the 350 block any other suggestions out there???

Maybe I finally got lucky . Also I wanted to say I dont doubt Bill I was kind of "thinking out loud" again. So Norm what do ya think 302,327,350,360, OR 383 going to try the splayed cap if everything check out ok.

If everything checks out turn it into a 4 bolt main 383! No replacement for displacement!

I thought about being different with it but why reinvent the wheel there is so much 383 info out there and the parts are easily available.

Griff, what are You going to do with it? Torque? Higher RPM? That will decide how to build it.
