Default 305 v8, intake manifold swap. HELP

hey, im only 15 and im still learning about vehicles, i have a 1987 z28 camaro, im swaping my stock intake manifold with a performance edelbrock manifold, in the insructions, it says to get the car to a complete stop and drive it full throttle and watch what kmph the vehicle is at when it changes gears, and do that after you get the new manifod on too, tomake sure they change gears at the same kmph.the problem is, i dont have my license and the car isent licesned so i cant do that, so can i just go ahead and change the manifold without doing that? or is that manditiory? thanks, any replies will be appreciated. (also, dose anyone know how muc h more hp this will give me?)[ball park guess]

God bless you young manand enjoy yourself with that Camaro. I've done the Edelbrock swap on my 305 and don't remember that being in the directions, however my best guess is the adjustment of your TV cable or location of the mount on the new manifold may not be exactly in the same position as the oem location and this will change the shift point.I would call Edelbrock for an explination.

Good Luck

Exactly right, Roy. C4maro, the reason for that is indeed because you must make sure that the transmission TV cable (there will be a cable connected to the throttle linkage that is also connected to the transmission) is in the same position that it was before. If it's not, it wont shift at the right point and it will burn up the transmission pretty quick. Have someone give it a good run for you and check it, you don't want to end up with a scrap tranny.
I have to add, how on EARTH did you end up with an '87 Z28?? Lucky kid you are. Although, I suppose I DID end up with a free '79 chevy step side truck when I was 15...two years of happy ownership of that truck. This is a perfect chance for you to learn about this stuff, that's when I started learning. Keep it up, and way to go opting for changing the intake yourself!
