305 Build up... Experts needed!!!
Ok folks,
Here we go. I now have my 1991 R/S 305 TBI. I want to start upgrading the engine and go from there. I am not the most advanced person to be working on engines, but I am mechanically inclined. I read the article on here about the 325 HP 305. Took some notes and have conducted some searches. I want to stay with the 305, beef it up, and chrome it out. I need you engine experts to help me find parts that compliment each other for an effective upgrade. So Shoot.
Thanks
J

Mr. RatMotor,
As I said before I dont want to change to a 350. I want to keep the 305, give it a liitle umfh, and chrome it out to be a show car. I am an interior and electrical guy so thats why I need the advice for what parts will complimate each other. I am not looking to take this car up and over 500 HP. That will be my next Camaro.
Thanks,

Make a 334 out of it. We do a few of them here and there and they are nice engines. It is a torque monster and is not all that bad on fuel either. The small bore makes it less likely to detonate too.
Guys that claim 305 engines are junkare just speaking what they know not of.....or just repeating something they heard from the hangouts.

Machineman.
What will I need to do to make it into a 334? About how much are we looking at as well? Are they any considerations I need to make? Like I tole RatMotor I am an interior and electrical guy not an engine. This will be my first engine and I am ready to learn and get into it.
Thanks,
J

Till the man gets back on here this is some short block component prices http://www.dallasexportsales.com/RA334.htmyou are basically putting a 400 stroke in a 305 the same thing you would do to make a 383 out of a 350. The block will need clearanced to run this setup I see around$800 to $1000 in machining +the parts purchase to get the bottom end properly prepared for assembly. At that point you need to consider heads the tbi swirl ports are not the best head gm has made and instead of dumping alot of money in them for porting to make them perform I would look to the after market. My guess on the end cost for a decent properly preped stroked 305 is around $4000. That is why you see the negativity about really building the 305 itwill costs less to build a 350 for the same performance.
Griff beat me to the punch but he has most of it laid out for you. If you are really interested, I can work up some prices for you on a shortblock and we can discuss from there. The 334 engine is a truley nice combination if it is prepared correctly. Send me a PM with your e-mail and I can assist your further.

I know not of rebuilding 305s at all.
I only tried (emphasis on tried)to eek everybit of HP out of them I could since I DID rebuild them when we used to run claimer classes for IMCA Hobby Stock. They're a dime a dozen and not worth the effort unless in the case of the origianl poster and absolutely wants to keep the original 305 (why, I don't know since he says he wants more power)If the main goal is power, then why would you even suggest stroking a 305? They have smaller bores which means more clearancing (i.e. more labor costs). The heads have tiny ports and valves, which will only get you so far. The intake ports have horrible short side radius compared to even a regular old 327/350 head. The list could go on. For you to make a blanket statement like the one above shows some shallowness on your part. Sounds to me like you must be repeating just what gets thrown around in your shop.
Oh by the way, I may not build too many engines anymore because of more important priorities, but I do get my hands dirty with one of the leading NHRA Stock/Superstock engine builders of the northwest. Try 748HP out of a little 314 SBC for a Comp Elim car. Over 2HP per C.I.all naturally aspirated. Like to like,a 350 will out torque, out HP, out Dyno that 334 and be more reliable simply for the fact that there were no block crank mods done. It'll probably get about the same MPG and cost A LOT less. GRIFF has way underestimated the stroked cost.
I think I'm qualified to make a statement about a 305.....................

RM
Why would you not want to go with a 350. That would be less work then beefing up a 305. Even sicksicksick himself would tell you to go with a 350. .......If your not lookin for a lot of extra power then toss on some headers and a cold air intake and call it a day.
