Default 305 or 350?

Im looking to do a rebuild on my 305 and dont know where to start, im new at this and never did a rebuild before. should i rebuild the 305 or get a 350 to rebuild? Id like to get more power out of my camaro..its got 127k on it and is rather slow... :/ this is my project car so its not my every day driver.. so is the 305 a waste of time? Plus ive seen some rebuild kits on ebay but i dont want to buy knock off parts...please help!!

If you do, it'll take four times as long as you think it will and cost three times as much.

Maybe you won't make as many mistakes along the way as I did but I am now $7000 and 6 months into my 305-350 swap, and it's not even in the car yet.

Here's my thread about it if you're curious.

dont let people trash on 305s i got one that would just **** off 90% of 350 owners, there good strong motors, im in the 390horse zone and im pulling bout 18~20mpg too,

i also got a 400 im going to be building here shortly, but for a day to day driver, or a weekend rod, i would use a 305 any day, its all what you put into it, my old tired 305 i had was still a barnstormer, and was starting to burn oil, and i held up with plenty of 350s pulling on just as hard as i was. then i built another one, love when people ask me what i have in my car and i just smile and laugh, tell them its a 305 and the reactions i get are priceless, but im always one to build sleepers,

good luck with your projects bro,

You can give this thread a read through, if you want.

Of course, the cost is going to vary a lot depending on whether you are doing the work, or someone else.

If you buy a new engine instead, either buy new or be very careful- mine looked fine, passed compression tests, wasn't making metal, all that stuff, but the block was cracked; I spent $2k on an engine and basically only got to keep the rotating assembly.

i did some head work on my 305, and the guy i got it from had the heads shaved 3 times, bout max, bumped my compression up to about 10:1 the cam im keeping a secret but any one here would tell you its WAY to big for a 305, yada yada 212duration should be max for a 305, ect.... i down right **** people off with how my 305 sounds, and people ask me what it is and i just tell them its what ever you want it to be, they dont believe me its a 305, and i still pull 18~20mpg (not that im worried about it) with a TH350 and a 1900 RPM stall, i will get yeah a vid of my camaro some time here shortly and show yeah bud,

also just so you know what they say about 305s are true, 350s are much better motor, they are not the most amazing motor, but, i had a brand new crate 305 sitting here and in the spirit of hot rodding i wanted to push those limits, and i have a motor im happy with the results, an identical version of my motor in a 350 would knock the doors off my 79, but you do what you can do with with you have man

well said, looking forward to seeing that video of your camaro.. so my engine is making an odd sound now.. when i give it some gas I hear a smacking sound coming out of the intake..so could i have a stuck intake valve? i know its off topic but just thought id say something since it came to mind... Since im keeping my 305 i seen some rebuild kits on ebay for about 500 bucks from EngineTech..also im planing on doing the work myself.. I got a 2 hour video on how to rebuild small blocks like the 305, so that was really helpful since ive never rebuild an engine before. i feel confindent in my abilities to tackle this project. thanks for the link to Saint Ebony

well right now there is a loud slapping noise coming from the intake when i give it gas. so i dont really know what it is, im thinking maybe an intake valve is stuck open?
other than that id like a bigger cam and pistions, pretty much a complete rebuild..but im not really looking for 500hp or anything crazy..i never go to the track or anything like that.. but i would like to get atleast 250hp or 300hp if possible...
